American Advantages and Weaknesses
The Americans were fighting on their home ground, unlike the British who were far from home and far away from their own resources. The American Patriots were deeply committed to the conflict in the war, while their enemy only halfheartedly supported the war. From the beginning of 1777, Americans received benefit and substantial aid from abroad, when the war involved some of the strongest powers in Europe, such as France. American victory was a result of many miscalculations and errors by the British forces in the early stages of the fighting, and it was also a result of the overall transformation of the war into three very different stages.
British Advantages and Weaknesses
The British possessed the greatest navy and equipped army in the world. They had access to the resources of an empire and had a strong structure of command, whereas the Americans were struggling to both create a new army and a new government while trying to fight an extensive war. Some of Britain's weaknesses included a series of blunders and errors in the early stages of the war and fighting and the lack of international abroad support from other strong powers in Europe, like France.
