King George III
George III became king in 1760 on the death of his grandfather. He was determined to be an active and responsible monarch and he removed the coalition of Whigs from power who had governed the empire for much of the century. He created a new coalition to replace them and the new ministries that emerged as a result of his changes were unstable. King George III also had serious intellectual and psychological limitations. He suffered from a rare disease that produced intermittent bouts of insanity. Even when he was rational, he was very immature and insecure. He was very ill-equipped to handle the challenges he seized for himself. His personality contributed to the instability of the British government during these years.
