Olive Branch Petition
In 1775, The Continental Congress adopted the Olive Branch Petition which was a conciliatory appeal to the king. It expressed hope for reconciliation between the colonies and Great Britain, but it was rejected by the British government. This left them with two alternatives, unconditional submission to the tyranny of irritated ministers or resistance by force.
