Loyalists
Many of those in America did not rejoice after hearing the news about the Declaration of Independence. Some had actually disapproved of the war from the beginning. Others were willing to support the war only if it did not conflict with their loyalty to the king. These people called themselves Loyalists, but supporters of Independence called them Tories.
